CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

Want to Make it Easy for a Crook?

  • Prop open that exterior self-locking door. You never know who may want to come in.
  • Don't bother to lock your room when you leave for class.
  • Save time - leave all your money and jewelry out on the dresser, easy to find.
  • Act like the Lone Ranger. Don't get to know the other people living near you.
  • Advertise. Leave a note on the door to let everyone know that you're not there.
  • Be generous. Share your keys, ID, and driver's license with the whole world.
  • Leave your blinds open and lights on at night so it's easy to see in.

Tips on what you should always do.

  • When away from your home, LOCK YOUR DOORS.
  • LOCK YOUR DOORS to your car, park in well lighted areas, and remove valuables from the vehicle.
  • LOCK UP YOUR BICYCLES to a stationary bike rack and use a U-LOCK or similar locking device.
  • KEEP YOUR BOOK BAG WITH YOU always and take it with you when you go to the bathroom or copy machine.
  • DON'T WALK ALONE in parking lots, use the buddy system and walk with confidence, remember strength in numbers.
  • PLAN AHEAD when going off-campus. Tell your roommates where you are going and when you will return. Plan a ride before you leave and never drink anything that someone just hands you. ALWAYS carry enough money for a phone call or a taxi ride home.

Thinking about trying illegal drugs?

Illegal drug use can result in a jail term or other serious legal actions. People who participate in the use of drugs may also:

  • have automobile accidents
  • become ill
  • develop financial difficulties
  • become irritable, belligerent, or violent
  • become addicted
  • overdose and die

When going partying beware of the "date rape" drugs.

"Date rape" drugs are often referred to as "roofies". This is easily put into drinks and causes memory loss and an extremely altered state of mind. This makes a female vulnerable to sexual assault and rape.

Don't let a fun night turn into a nightmare. Take precautions when you are out to have a good time.

  • Never leave your drink alone, take it to the bathroom with you.
  • Never accept a drink from someone else.
  • Never go alone, so that you and your friends can watch out for each other.
  • Always plan an escape plan, have a ride pre-arranged or enough money for a taxi.
